Fuel System Checks (FSC)

We were the pioneers of Fuel System Checks, a service to routinely monitor the effective and efficient operation of purifiers/clarifiers. By taking samples before and after the purifier/clarifier, the current efficiency of the centrifuge can be monitored and then adjusted if required.

Based on the ISO8217:2017 maximum limit on Aluminium+Silicon (Al+Si) of 60 mg/kg, major engine manufacturers recommend less than 15 mg/kg at the engine inlet, i.e. approximately 75% of the Al+Si content has to be removed in the purifier/clarifier.

When should Fuel System Checks be performed?

  • Periodically for routine checks;

  • When operational problems are experienced;

  • When poor quality bunkers are delivered;

  • When Fuel Quality Testing reports indicate Al+Si > 40 mg/kg, based on which VPS recommends FSC samples to be submitted.

Why Are Fuel System Checks Important?

Proper centrifuge operation is essential for removing fuel impurities such as catalytic fines (Al+Si) and water. From our experience, the fuel treatment systems onboard many vessels do not always operate at optimal efficiency levels. This means impurities from bunkers entering the engine combustion chamber may not have been adequately reduced to a level for safe engine operation. With the FSC programme, malfunctions and defects in the centrifuges can be identified.

What Are the Benefits of Fuel System Checks?
  • FSCs monitor and evaluate the efficiency (%) of the purifier/clarifier as well as the condition of the individual fuel cleaning components.

  • FSCs help reduce operational costs and increases lifetime of critical components.

  • FSCs helps to identify potential risks and operational issues before major damage occurs.

  • FSCs identify the presence of unusual components that can enter the fuel after delivery.

Upon arrival at any of our laboratories, fuel analysis is performed according to the client’s fuel purchasing specification, usually to ISO 8217 requirements. The full suite of tests is normally completed within 24 hours.

Technical Advisory and Release of the FQT Results:

Test results are evaluated by our technical experts who will determine if the fuel has met the required standards and provide you with fuel handling advise for optimal operation performance. The Enhanced FQT Report is available in colour-coded pdf format in two parts comprising specification comparison and an operational trend. If there are urgent issues on the quality of your fuel we will contact you personally.
